Why is my brief empty?
Every empty state, with its cause and its fix. Two things explain most of them: no connected channel, and competitors with no social links attached.
Almost every “my brief is empty” report comes down to one of six causes. Work down this page in order — the first two account for most of them.
No brief at all
You open the app and it says “No brief yet for today”.
- No delivery channel is connected. This is the answer most of the time. With nowhere to send it, ScoutRival doesn't generate the brief in the first place. Go to Channels, connect Telegram, Slack or Discord, and hit Test. Full explanation →
- Your only channel is paused. A paused channel doesn't count as connected — same outcome as having none.
- The hour hasn't passed yet in your timezone.
You can always hit Generate today's brief to produce one on the spot.
“Quiet week”, or rivals showing no activity
Your competitors are listed, but they're all on the Monitoring tier and nothing has been captured.
Your competitors have no social links attached. A competitor with no LinkedIn, no Instagram and no blog URL gives us nothing to check — so there's nothing to report. Open Brand → Competitors, hit Edit on each one, and paste their profiles. If several are affected you'll also see an orange banner at the top of your brief telling you how many.
Other reasons a week reads quiet:
- They genuinely didn't post. A real quiet week is useful information — it's a window to lead the conversation instead of react to it. The brief says so explicitly.
- A link has gone dead. After two consecutive failures we back off and show an amber warning on the competitor's card. Fix the URL and it resumes.
No social posts were drafted
Three different messages, three different causes:
- “No platforms enabled” — you haven't picked any. Open Brief Settings and tick the platforms you want.
- “No social drafts for today yet” — platforms are enabled but this brief produced none. Hit Regenerate brief.
- “Not generated yet” on one platform — the rest worked, that one didn't. Use the Regenerate button on that card.
Also check Social posts per day in Brief Settings isn't set to 0.
A post has a “Low confidence” chip
Every draft is checked against your voice and the platform's rules — length, hashtag count, banned phrases, and how closely it matches your fingerprint. If it can't get a draft past that bar after two attempts, we ship the best one and label it honestly rather than pretending.
Usually it means your voice fingerprint is thin. Add a few more writing samples under Brand → Voice and regenerate.
No blog suggestion
- Blog cadence is set to “Off” in Brief Settings. That's the only setting that hides the card completely.
- Blog topics per day is 0.
No keyword gaps
The Gap Board says “No open keyword gaps right now.” Either you genuinely out-rank your rivals on everything we track — good news — or one of these:
- Your Brand Engine hasn't finished building. Gaps are computed against your market keywords, and there aren't any yet. Check the Brand Engine panel at the bottom of your brief.
- Your brand has no services listed. No services means weak keywords means no meaningful gaps. Fix that first →
- It's not due a refresh. Gaps recompute every couple of days, not on every brief.
AI share-of-voice shows a dash
The tile reads — with the note “measuring”.
- You have no competitors. Share-of-voice is a comparison — with nobody to compare against, it can't run at all.
- It hasn't run yet. It's on a weekly cycle, or you can run it on demand from SEO & AI Visibility → AI Visibility.
The content is fine, but it feels generic
This is the most common quality complaint, and it has one cause far more often than any other.
Every idea ScoutRival generates has to map to something you sell. With an empty services list it falls back on your industry alone — and industry-level content is, by definition, content any of your competitors could have published. Products & Services →
After that, in order of impact:
- Train your voice. Paste three or four things you've actually written under Brand → Voice. The difference is not subtle.
- Set platform rules. “Always end with our booking link.” “Never use emoji.” These are respected on every future post — set them once, on the card or in Brief Settings.
- Check your fingerprint isn't stale. If you added samples after it was last computed, an amber chip says so. Regenerate it.
Cards that aren't there at all
Some sections only appear when they have something honest to say:
- Nothing above “What your rivals did” — you have no competitors yet. Add some.
- No Differentiation card — it needs at least two competitors with readable websites to find saturated ground.
- No Topic Gaps card — no themes cleared the bar this cycle.
- No Brand Engine panel — the engine hasn't been built yet. It builds when you finish brand setup.
We'd rather show you nothing than a card full of filler.
